DescriptionBioluminescent plant technology has moved from the laboratory to the pilot project stage. Successfully cultivated orchids and chrysanthemums, which glow in the dark without external power sources, are planned to be used for decorative lighting along walkways. Major Chinese cities (Shenzhen, Shanghai) have already announced their readiness to test these “living lamps” in municipal parks in the second half of 2026. Given how quickly Chinese technologies are adopted in the CIS, the appearance of the first exhibition areas featuring glowing flowers in Moscow or Astana could become the highlight of landscape design this season. The focus is on the official launch of the first park area illuminated exclusively by plants.
ConditionsYes: if, by December 31, 2026 (inclusive), a public park area or promenade is officially opened in any city in the world where bioluminescent plants (GMO flowers/trees) are designated as the primary source of decorative nighttime lighting.
No: if, by the end of 2026, the technology remains confined to closed greenhouses, private collections, or one-time exhibitions without the opening of permanent public locations.
