DescriptionDue to the predicted severe El Niño season, water levels in the key Lake Gatún are falling. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has approved a schedule for reducing the maximum allowable draft for giant Neopanamax-class container ships: Starting July 24, the limit will drop to 14.94 m (49.0 feet), and starting August 15, to 14.78 m (48.5 feet). A reduction in draft of even 1.5 feet deprives a mega-vessel of about 600 TEU of cargo. The market fears that if the drought worsens, the ACP will be forced to announce an emergency reduction (below the announced level of 48.5 feet). The question is whether the administration will issue new, even stricter draft restrictions for vessels.
ConditionsYes: if, during the period from July 19 to August 31, 2026, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) officially announces an additional reduction in the maximum draft for Neopanamax locks to a level below the announced threshold of 14.78 meters (48.5 feet). No: if, during the period from July 19 to August 31, 2026, no additional draft restrictions below the planned level of 14.78 meters are imposed or announced.
